The 2010/2011 Stories Afloat Festival

Imagine yourself as one of eighty or so Chicago area young writers traveling aboard a 19th century sailing ship, the Tall Ship Windy. Your shipmate, in full seadog regalia, tells tales of life on Lake Michigan, such as the misfortune of some whose lives were stolen away in tumultuous fall waves, and whose spirits still haunt these waters. Stories of women and men of the water, cultures mixing like swirling tides. Alongside you on your journey are professional sailors and experienced writers and teachers of creative writing. In one of three Stories Afloat events, singer/songwriter Lee Murdock performs his ballad, “Saint Martin Island.” You are breathing in the lake air, your eyes full of beautiful sights, capturing the feeling in your journal. Creativity takes varied paths and there is no 'right way' of expressing it. You may write a poem, a song—a love, ghost, mystery or any kind of story. Your words will form on the page like the wind filling the Windy's large sails. Following your adventure aboard the Windy, you’ll take part in writing workshops ashore with some of the best teachers of creative programs throughout Chicago, including the Columbia College Chicago Fiction Writing Department. You can make new friends, form a new group of writers that have drawn from the longstanding, successful process of maritime inspiration. Your journal will be filled with a treasure chest of new ideas for a piece of writing that you develop and have the opportunity to share on the Stories Afloat blog and maybe even read at the Chicago Maritime Festival.
